Background

I had the great pleasure to contribute a vehicle design to the "Nuthin' but Mech" concept design book "Traverse" which is published by Design Studio Press.

Traditionally, vehicle concept design is dominated by aggressive looking machinery that leans itself to military equipment with a rather brutal and dominant presence. My goal was to move away from these stereotypes by asking myself:

What if sci-fi travel was as relaxed as a lazy afternoon rowing boat trip, as quiet as a Zeppelin ride, yet more spectacular than travelling at the speed of light.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Inspiration

The design is inspired by deep-sea organisms to create a vehicle architecture that blends translucent skins with lightweight structures and a bioluminescent glow. The goal was to create a volume that almost dissolves against the sky and feels weightless despite its impressive dimensions.

A gondola is held central to the main volume and offers an open and comfortable travel experience with minimal boundaries to the environment. At night, a bioluminescent glow creates an energized feel and brings the aircraft to life.

“TRAVERSE” BOOK

I was always a big fan of Design Studio Press and also own quite a few of their concept art books myself. I couldn’t believe my luck when my mate Christian Grajewski connected me with Lorin Wood to fill in his double page in the latest edition of “Nuthin' but Mech”, called “Traverse”

Surprisingly, Lorin already knew my Bladerunner Spinner project and after a quick email exchange I became part of this great collection of concept vehicles by some of Hollywood’s finest entertainment designers. What a great honour, indeed.
